The Outerwear Project:
For my first project of Second year we had to design an outerwear garment of our choosing and combine that with a creative narrative, we also had to have a brand in mind that our outerwear piece would fit with. I chose to look into representing the LGBTQ+ community.
After lots of research I came across the story of the L.G.S.M Group- In 1984/1985 following huge cuts to the National Union of Miners put into place by Margaret Thatcher, a small group of Lesbians, and Gay men started to raise funds to support the Miners. I chose to develop a 'Jean Jacket' as they were high fashion garments of the era. This jacket tells the story of these two groups of people coming together.
I chose to add embroidery of miners tools to the jacket in bright 80's colours, miners would wear denim jackets to work so i wanted to represent the history in the jacket but interpreted in a modern way thats also fun.
CAGED
THE COLLABORATION PROJECT:
For this project we had to chose a societal issue that we feel passionate about and turn that into an art installation. I decided to chose the fur industry as my focus, I wanted to represent the confinements and discomfort that fur-farm animals endure through an artistic piece of fashion. I designed a cage dress that restricts the wearers movements just like a caged animal. I took inspiration from straight jackets as a means of styling the garment as these jackets are designed to restrict humans. I collaborated with The Humane Society to produce a campaign to end fur farming with the dress being the main way to illustrate the cruelty and create a shock reaction.
THE MUSE PROJECT:
In this project we were asked to choose a female muse that inspires us, and we had to design an outfit for that person. I chose Jane Goodall for her conservation work, I wanted to focus on her love story, she met her husband in the jungle where she was studying chimps. I wanted to create a romantic outfit that she would wear to an event with a colour palette that is inspired by her jungle surroundings.
